Discount Calculation FAQs

What is a stacked or additional discount?

A stacked discount represents a secondary discount applied to the price after the first discount has been calculated. For example, if an item is 20% off and you have an additional 10% coupon, the 10% is computed off the discounted subtotal, not the original price, resulting in an effective 28% total discount instead of 30%.

How does sales tax apply to discounted items?

In most tax jurisdictions, sales tax is computed on the final discounted sale price of the item, rather than the original retail price. Our calculator automatically handles this order of operations to give you an exact out-of-pocket budget projection.

What is the formula for discount calculations?

To calculate savings: Discount Amount = Original Price * (Discount Percent / 100). The final sale price is: Sale Price = Original Price - Discount Amount. With sales tax: Final Price = Sale Price * (1 + Tax Percent / 100).
