Tip Calculations FAQs

What is the standard tip percentage?

Standard tipping benchmarks vary by region. In North America, a tip between 15% and 20% of the pre-tax bill amount is standard for good restaurant service. Tipping is less common or optional in parts of Europe and Asia.

How does diner rounding logic affect the split?

When splitting dining bills, cents splits can result in awkward calculations. Rounding diner shares (rounding either the tip share or the total share to the next whole dollar) standardizes individual cash or card transactions, adjusting the grand total bill by a few cents.

Is sales tax included in the tip calculation?

Strictly speaking, tips should be calculated on the subtotal cost of the food and service before sales tax is added. However, many customers calculate the tip on the final grand total for simplicity.
